Structured Cabling Standards

Structured Cabling Standards in Canada

Structured cabling standards in Canada is the ANSI/TIA. The standards are created, reviewed, and controlled by the Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA). The standards created by the TIA are for commercial building telecommunication cabling, products, and services. The current version of the ANSI/TIA standard is revision D from 2017. The ANSI/TIA standard was developed collectively through many organizations consisting of manufacturers, users, and consultants.

The first version of the TIA standards was released in 1991, structured cabling standards have grown and change dramatically through the years as the rapid pace of technology has changed. The adoption of personal computers and data networks in the workplace have played a critical role in advancing the standards to incorporate more and more technology.

One of important note in advancement in technology is the popularization of fibre optics cables, and high-performance copper twisted pair cables. The ANSI/TIA structured cabling standards defines approved cabling types, distances, connectors, system architecture, terminations, installation requirements, and cable testing procedures. Adhering to the standards set out by the TIA, should result in safety of the data system infrastructure, ability for service/upgrade of a system and the longevity of the cable system.

A Background on Structured Cabling

Structured cabling consists of category 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5e, 6, 6A, 7, and 8. While the categories 1 and 2 were only used in voice circuits and the categories 3 and above were used for data. The categories reflect the cables performance levels in signal bandwidth, insertion loss, and crosstalk. Essentially the higher the number of a category, the higher the rate of data transmission for that cable.

Structured cabling was generally for a telephone system infrastructure, but then came the invention of the internet, along with the development of personal computers and incredible advancement in technology.

In today’s workplace, the most secure and reliable source for highspeed data transmission and large bandwidths is a hardwired cable stemming from a structured cable infrastructure. In the world of wireless, access points are also hardwired into the structured cabling system that can provide the speed and bandwidth necessary for all the wireless devices connected to wireless access points.

Structured Cabling Installation

Structured cabling is the design and installation of a cabling system that should be ready for today’s and the future’s hardware requirements. Bluewire applies this belief to all our projects. When we assess a current infrastructure, we will bring attention to outdated equipment that is either cluttering or bottlenecking your system. For new builds of cabling infrastructures, we have the growth of your business in the forefront of our design plans. This means that in a Bluewire designed and installed cabling system, they are capable of additional cable runs while keeping costs minimal because of the planning of extra conduits, larger cable trays, and other equipment in the initial construction.
